Things to Do in Japan
Stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan, which will give you a glimpse into the culture. These types of inns often have peaceful gardens, communal baths and traditional robes. You will dine on traditional cuisine and sleep on a futon on the floor at night.
Speaking of communal baths, soaking in an onsen is an experience that you must have while in Japan. This is a natural hot springs and the steaming water is a wonderful way to relax while immersing yourself in the culture. Bathing in these hot springs in a communal activity in Japan that dates back to 700 AD.
Of course, you’ll also want to sample some of the amazing fresh seafood that this country has to offer. Bowls of rice fresh seafood and gorgeous plates of beautifully arranged sushi await you.
Tokyo will likely be your first stop in Japan and it is a crazy, colourful, non-stop city. This mega metropolis is a bewildering blend of the old and the new and it will dazzle you with its contrast of futuristic culture and ancient traditions. The best time to visit Tokyo is during the end of March or beginning of April, as this is the cherry blossom season and the streets will be littered in beautiful pink blossoms.
The stunning Imperial Palace is a must-see when you are in Tokyo. Visitors must request tickets well in advance, but the elegant castle and lovely surrounding grounds are worth it. You can visit the grounds without applying in advance and they are open from 9am until 4:30pm.
Other highlights of your time in Tokyo will be the Senso-ji Temple (dedicated to the goddess of mercy), the Meiji Shrine and the famous Tsukiji Fish Market. Also, you should take the opportunity to visit Harajuku, as you will see some impressive fashions in this famous shopping district.
Of course, Tokyo is not the only place to visit in the Land of the Rising Sun. You can venture to Hokkaido, which is known for its wide open spaces and freezing winters. The city of Osaka is a huge city with a lot of museums, culture and attractions – including Universal Studios Japan. You can even visit Hakone, which is part of a volcanically active park and has fantastic views of the iconic Mt. Fuji.
Kyoto is a smaller city but is rich in terms of cultural heritage as it was the imperial capital for over a thousand years. Here you can see some truly impressive shrines, temples, palaces and other historical landmarks.
Yokohama is also a city worth visiting. It has an iconic ferris wheel, a theme park, several great restaurants and many shopping malls. It can easily be reached by train on a day trip from Tokyo.
If you are travelling with kids, take them to Tokyo Disneyland where you can enjoy a good old fashioned family-friendly day out at the theme park. It’s located in Chiba, just east of Tokyo.
