Things to Do in Italy
Your trip to Italy will likely begin with Rome, one of the most historically and culturally rich cities in the world. You can throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, admire the ruins of the Roman Forum, take a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, see the light streaming in through the roof of the Pantheon and stand where spectators once watched bloody gladiatorial battles at the Colosseum. Also, don’t miss the wonders of the Sistine Chapel and Vatican City and be sure to indulge in as much gelato as possible.
Venice should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Italy, as it is one of the most atmospheric and romantic places in the world. Take a boat ride down the canal at dusk and admire the stunning building facades and the glimmering waters. Pisa is also a must – as it is home to the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. Also, Milan is an interesting stop – rich with culture and one of the major fashion cities in the world.
If you love Italian cuisine, head to Naples which is the home of many well loved foods including spaghetti, pizza and parmigiana. Here you can taste the original versions of these dishes – made with care and fresh, locally grown ingredients. While in Naples you can also visit Pompeii, where you can see the ruins of an ancient city perfectly preserved in ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
The Italian Lake District offers plenty to explore, with scenic lakes, wonderful weather and a slow pace of life. The largest lake is Garda, but there is also Como with its forested shores and Maggiore with several excellent family resorts.
If you visit Sicily you’ll have an abundance of history and art to enjoy, from the ornate Baroque churches of Palermo to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. Here you can find Roman ruins as well as Greek ruins which are even older.
Be sure to also visit Florence, a city that art and architecture geeks will fall in love with. It was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and there are so many excellent museums here, including the famous Uffizi Gallery where you can see Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and the Accademia where you can see Michelangelo’s David.
Be sure to also visit Tuscany, one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. You can take a tour of this lovely rolling countryside and enjoy wine tasting and traditional Italian cuisine made with locally grown ingredients.
